A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's major government projects.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” declared the head of state.
The president announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term ended the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its duties in civilian works. They were built at an rapid pace, beating expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled ongoing apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party demanded an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "calls for immediate answers."
In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in full accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
