Cancellieri Demonstrates Glimpses of Genius in Bright Spot for Haywire Lazio

The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was anything but joyful on Saturday afternoon. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a side that had allowed 10 goals while managing only two goals in their most recent five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their ongoing dissent in a long-running conflict with president Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Falling Apart?

Was the team's progress falling apart, or was there ever a binding element holding it together from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, only for him publicly stated that the management had failed to disclose the transfer ban they were about to receive for financial irregularities. Speculation that his departure was imminent were not true, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Roman club appeared equally disorganized in their performances as they were off it, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the remaining opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to ascertain if they're getting better or collapsing.

The Youngster's Unexpected Return

At least one man kept smiling amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to be at Lazio this year. He completed last season on loan at Parma and, during the summer break, his owning club were attempting to remain there for another season. The registration embargo led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to thin their squad with no new signings.

Cancellieri arrived originally during Sarri's previous tenure, back then just 20 years old graduate of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 Serie A appearances for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those as a substitute. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left after that campaign, later stated Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."

Uncovering His Best Role

Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to work out the exact type of his skill set. Originally described as a wide forward on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself most of that campaign as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
