British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, located using intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several access tunnels providing entry to the facility... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike shows British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among a great many British personnel on duty over the festive period. This operation, to remove militants who endanger our security, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military executed what it described as a "major assault" against Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
