Intense Winds Cause Tens of Thousands Without Power in the Island Nation

Storm damage in New Zealand
Citizens advised to stay indoors as powerful gusts strike the nation.

Intense gusts attaining speeds of up to 155km/h (96mph) have resulted in around 90,000 households without power and compelled officials to cancel more than 100 aircraft departures, as reported by local media.

These gusts are affecting the whole South Island and southern parts of the North Island, per the weather forecasting body.

New Zealand authorities have released infrequent high-level wind alerts - the highest alert level - in central regions including Wellington and Canterbury.

Residents have been advised to remain inside, refrain from journeys, and prepare for more utility disruptions.

Widespread Damage and Crisis Measures

The power cut seems to be impacting residences predominantly in the southern region, though authorities report that the electricity supply was being restored progressively.

Local media have reported that in various locations structures have suffered roof damage, whereas utility poles and vegetation have been knocked down by the winds.

Across Wellington, a person was lost his life after being impacted by a falling limb at a frequent walking route on earlier this week.

Meanwhile in Wellington, a woman was blown onto oncoming traffic on a thoroughfare by a powerful blast, in a event that was filmed in a widely shared car camera footage.

Air travel to and from the urban area have been halted because of the weather, whereas various routes and public facilities are not operating.

At the same time authorities in Canterbury have announced a crisis declaration, to support recovery activities.

Strike Action Alongside Harsh Weather

The wild winds on this day coincide with many of educators, medical professionals and government employees are participating in what has been called a "mega strike", requesting higher wages and enhanced employment terms.

However the intense climate has compelled them to alter certain arrangements, with various open-air gatherings moved indoors or cancelled.

Similar gusts are impacting the neighboring country, ushering in a heatwave to the remote areas.

Officials have issued fire bans for apprehension regarding forest fires.
