Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
